Steve Mazurana
One of the University of Northern Colorado’s greatest traditions is its teaching faculty; they are intellectually vibrant scholars who are active in their disciplines and involved with the students in every aspect of their college experience. They are committed educators who give individual attention and support to students in and outside of the classroom. Steve Mazurana is just this type of educator, one who has gone beyond the classroom to solidify his students’ success in their desired careers.
In
Steve Mazurana’s 40-year career at the University of Northern Colorado, he has
encouraged, inspired and mentored countless students. For Professor Mazurana, a
political science education does not end in the classroom, but is enhanced by
first-hand experience internship opportunities in government, politics and the
legal system. He has tirelessly identified and arranged relevant internships
for his students to advance their course of knowledge and provide invaluable
experience beyond the textbooks and lecture halls. His students have gone on to
be judges, attorneys, law enforcement officers, consultants, legislators,
criminologists, and educators, to name a few.
The
Steve Mazurana Endowed Political Science Scholarship has been developed to
continue to provide an endless legacy to Steve’s unbiased teaching, civic
engagement and love for his students. The scholarship will allow the University
to continue to recruit talented students, reward current students and provide
opportunities for students to launch their careers in an experiential learning
environment through internships. The objective is to build a $250,000 endowment
in Steve Mazurana’s name to strengthen the cause of knowledge and education in
political science at the University of Northern Colorado. Additionally, this
scholarship will highlight Steve Mazurana, long known in the region for his
teaching ability, leadership, civic engagement, integrity and dedication to his
students.
As a tribute to Steve, The Steve Mazurana Endowed Political Science Scholarship was announced on November 12, 2009 at the Governor’s Mansion in Denver as we honored and celebrated Steve’s 40-year career and his well-deserved retirement. With this scholarship we strive to carry on Steve’s endless legacy — one in which political science students will continue to be enriched by the internship experience.
