Mike and Judy Tormey

I met Mike while we were both juniors in high school. I went to Greeley Central and Mike attended College High (now University High.) Mike and a buddy had planned a double date, but Mike’s date cancelled, so he found himself in the uncomfortable position of “third wheel” at a drive-in movie. I happened to be at that same drive-in movie in the car next to Mike’s with my girlfriend. Since Mike knew my friend, he invited himself to join us.

Judy (Best) ’73 and Mike Tormey ‘72

Mike and I began classes at CSC in 1968, with Mike living at Harrison Hall and me at home with my family. Although Mike began expanding his knowledge and interest in history and coaching, he was encouraged by others to reconsider his career path. The Vietnam War and the draft were reminders for Mike to stay focused on college and Mike realized his talent in the area of business and finance, graduating in 1972. In 1973, Mike began his banking career and I earned my nursing degree. We had support of good friends who were equally impoverished at that time, and Mike’s affiliation with Sigma Chi fraternity provided social opportunities and the foundation for many friendships that continue today.

Our time at UNC positively impacted our life together. We learned that no goal is beyond our reach if we are committed to work toward the end result and that there is more to life than what is at hand. Our lives impact those near us and others we may never meet.

Mike and I enjoy traveling, skiing and the company of family and good friends over fine wine. We have been blessed with three wonderful children and two grandchildren and the opportunity to reach out to others.
