Cumbres Scholarship Reception

The College of Education and Behavioral Sciences hosted a Cumbres Scholarship Reception for Cumbres donors and student scholarship recipients on November 11 at the Judy Farr Alumni Center. The event included a welcome and thank you by the program director Linda Carbajal, an update on UNC’s excellent teacher preparation program from Dean Eugene Sheehan and a short speech from Sarah Schleicher a senior Cumbres student, thanking the donors for their support. Sarah also talked about how through the donor’s investment Cumbres teachers are impacting young people’s education and lives throughout the world. She said she has had a fantastic educational experience and feels that the support and education she received will help her to continue the tradition of excellent Cumbres teachers that are in high demand by area school districts.

Cumbres is an innovative teacher preparation program in which teacher students receive additional credentials in either English as a Second Language and/or bilingual education. The ultimate goal is to improve teacher preparation for the instruction of Hispanic students, language minority students, children of poverty, and other diverse populations to eventually increase their graduate rates. All Cumbres students who meet the criteria of a 2.75 grade point average and who fulfill their other Cumbres requirements receive a $1500 scholarship each year they are in the program. Through individual, corporate and university support over $150,000 was provided in scholarships to Cumbres students for the 2010-2011 school year.

The Cumbres scholarship reception is an opportunity for donors to meet their scholarship recipients and learn more about their current studies and future plans.
